Artists Statement

My paintings are mostly derived from some personal experience of landscape and place. Based in the Norfolk countryside, I often travel abroad experiencing in both local and faraway places, a sense of wonder in natural phenomena.

To me, landscapes are also metaphors for more universal meanings such as journeying, rites of passage, initiation and even personal relationships.

Colour is important to me for the emotional connection with the vibrancy and sacredness of the earth and nature (as perhaps in the Gaia hypothesis where the planet earth is seen as a living organism).

My paintings are semi-abstract impressions and memories, usually in oils with added thinners or glazes.

I like to work large to engage energy and movement directly through my body.

My studio is in a row of what originally were stables for horses.
