My work comes from an interest in how ancient people celebrated the earth's cyclic flow. The old festivals which honoured the seasons, rituals which included earth, water, fire, air and spirit in solstice and equinox. Living in the Norfolk countryside I experience the changing seasons - and the movement of light in wide open skies, the earthyness of old trackways and fields, the smell after the rain in local lanes. The sea washing away the fragile land.
Just to breathe and relax into these sensuous elements around me enhances my appreciation for their sacredness, which in terms of colour and light, seem to dance over an underlying sense of timelessness. I try and capture the flavour of all this in mainly abstract work, though some work is based directly on a particular location and its associations.
I use oils with various glazes and thinners mixed to different consistences, which I may pour, drip, bleed, spray or wash, to build up layers of significance. I like to work spontaneously to let things emerge into a life of their own, and to work as large as possible to enhance the life energy and emotional connection.
