My paintings are made using the traditional process of oil on primed canvas, building layers of paint and transparent glazes mixed to different consistences, which may be poured, dripped, bled, sprayed, washed, or scraped back to build up layers of significance. After preliminary studies, I like to work spontaneously to let things emerge into a life of their own, and to work as large as possible to enhance the life energy and emotional connection.
My work draws from a passion about how ancient peoples celebrated the natural rhythms of the earth. The old festivals which celebrated the seasons with 'rituals' around ploughing, planting, and watering etc. in harmony with the phases of the moon. (This sacred way of experiencing the earth is currently being revived in Biodynamic Gardening and Permaculture.)
Recent work is based on the life-giving preciousness of water such as in the ancient 'rites of passage' as in baptism, or as in the healing properties of sacred springs.
These ideas are expressed in mainly abstract work, though some work is based directly on a particular location of local landscape or sea.
I gained BA Fine Art degree at Norwich School of Art and Design 1999.
